“The music of Moneka Group probably sounds like Miriam Makeba performing Pata Pata in Basra. Fela Kuti on a roadtrip with Oum Kalthoum to Baghdad. Or Miles Davis and Sheikh Al Tuni improvising to a Maqam.”

Moneka derives from the word Woneka, a secret ceremony preserved by generations of family members of the unique Afro-Iraqi community in Basra. The Music of Moneka Group translates Afro-Middle Eastern culture and Middle-Eastern Modal Music to Jazz, Latin and Desert Blues. The modern Melodies carried by traditional Rhythms of Sufi Music create conditions of practicing higher states of consciousness and listening to the unheard. By listening to Moneka Group, the audience is invited into spaces of movement, spirituality, rootedness and playfulness.
